Energetic adjustments in freely breeding-fasting king penguins: does colony density matter? ArchiMer
Viblanc, Vincent A.; Saraux, Claire; Malosse, Nelly; Groscolas, Rene.
1. For seabirds that forage at sea but breed while fasting on land, successful reproduction depends on the effective management of energy stores. Additionally, breeding often means aggregating in dense colonies where social stress may affect energy budgets. 2. Male king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) fast for remarkably long periods (up to 1 center dot 5months) while courting and incubating ashore. Although their fasting capacities have been well investigated in captivity, we still know very little about the energetics of freely breeding birds. 3. We monitored heart rate (HR, a proxy to energy expenditure), body temperature and physical activity of male king penguins during their courtship and first incubation shift in a colony of some 24000 freely...

Enhanced brain expression of genes related to cell proliferation and neural differentiation is associated with cortisol receptor expression in fishes ArchiMer
Sadoul, Bastien; Alfonso, Sebastien; Bessa, E.; Bouchareb, A.; Blondeau-bidet, E.; Clair, P.; Chatain, Beatrice; Begout, Marie-laure; Geffroy, Benjamin.
Stress enhances or inhibits neurogenesis in mammals and some fish species. The link between the two processes is still unclear. Most studies have been performed in very specific stressful or altered environments. Despite the known inter-individual divergence in coping abilities within populations, the relationship between the stress axis and neurogenesis has never been addressed in unstressed individuals. Here we correlate brain expression of the pcna (proliferating cell nuclear antigen) and neurod1 (neurogenic differentiation factor 1) genes, two markers of neurogenesis, with transcripts of cortisol receptors in three fish species living in very distinct environments. Within the three species, individuals with the highest expression of neurogenesis genes...

Environmental blue light prevents stress in the fish Nile tilapia BJMBR
Volpato,G.L.; Barreto,R.E..
The present study aimed to test the effects of blue, green or white light on the stress response of the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.). Each color was tested on two groups of isolated adult Nile tilapia (8 replicates each): one being subjected to confinement stress, and the other not (control). A different environmental color was imposed on each compartment by covering the light source with cellophane of the respective color (green or blue; no cellophane was used for white light). The intensity of green, white and blue lights was 250, 590 and 250 lux, respectively. Basal plasma cortisol levels were determined for each fish prior to the experimental procedures. The fish were confined by being displaced toward one side of the aquarium using an...

Environmental enrichment on the behavior and welfare of cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Assis,V.D.L.; Carvalho,T.S.G.; Pereira,V.M.; Freitas,R.T.F.; Saad,C.E.P.; Costa,A.C.; Silva,A.A.A..
ABSTRACT This study evaluated the influence of physical environmental enrichment on the behavior of cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus). Eighteen birds, nine males and nine females, were monitored in environments enriched with wooden sticks and bead rings and in non-enriched environments, in a completely randomized design. Behavioral categories were grouped into locomotion, maintenance, rest, feed, undesirable activities, and interaction with environmental enrichment. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis of behaviors to produce the ethogram and percentage comparison of frequency values for behavior analysis. Environmental enrichment positively influenced behavioral categories and some behavioral activities of birds.

Essential oil of Lippia alba in the transport of Nile tilapia Ciência Rural
Hohlenwerger,Janis Cumming; Baldisserotto,Bernardo; Couto,Ricardo David; Heinzmann,Berta Maria; Silva,Daniela Thomas da; Caron,Braulio Otomar; Schmidt,Denise; Copatti,Carlos Eduardo.
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to examine the action of the essential oil of Lippia alba (EOLA) in the stress response for transport of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus . The fish were transported into three treatments (in triplicate): control, 10 and 20 µL L-1 EOLA, with loading density of 15 fish/plastic bags for 8h. Plasma glucose levels were significantly decreased in fish exposed to 20µL L-1 EOLA in comparison with the control group and fish exposed to 10µL L-1 EOLA, but the plasma cortisol, lactate and paraoxonase levels were similar. Un-ionized ammonia and ventilatory rate demonstrated a significant reduction in the treatments with the use of EOLA. In conclusion the use of 20µL L-1 EOLA is indicated for Nile tilapia transport.

Estrous cycle and stress: influence of progesterone on the female brain BJMBR
Lovick,T.A..
The female brain operates in a constantly changing chemical milieu caused by cyclical changes in gonadal hormones during the estrous cycle (menstrual cycle in women). Such hormones are highly lipophilic and pass readily from the plasma to the brain where they can influence neuronal function. It is becoming clear that the rapid reduction in peripheral circulating progesterone, which occurs during the late diestrous phase of the cycle, can trigger a withdrawal-like response, in which changes in GABA A receptor expression render hyper-responsive certain brain areas involved in processing responses to stressful stimuli. The periaqueductal gray matter (PAG) is recognised as an important region for integrating anxiety/defence responses. Withdrawal from...

Evidence for a stress hypothesis: hemiparasitism effect on the colonization of Alchornea castaneaefolia A. Juss.uphorbiaceae) by Galling Insects Acta Amazonica
SCHWARTZ,Gustavo; HANAZAKI,Natalia; SILVA,Marivana B.; IZZO,Thiago J.; BEJAR,María E. P.; MESQUITA,Mariana R.; FERNANDES,G. Wilson.
Stressed plants are generally more attacked by galling insects. In this study we investigated the relationship between population abundance and species richness of galling insects on the tree Alchornea castaneaefolia A. JUSS. (Euphorbiaceae), submited to stress induced by the hemiparasite Psittacanthus sp. (Loranthaceae) in the Amazon, Brazil. Branches of A. castaneaefolia attacked by the hemiparasite were more heavily infested by galling insects than non-attacked branches. The field observations partially corroborate the hypothesis that there would be an optimal level of host-plant stress for galling insect establishment.

Evidence of hemispheric specialization in marmosets (Callithrix penicillata) using tympanic membrane thermometry BJMBR
Tomaz,C.; Verburg,M.S.; Boere,V.; Pianta,T.F.; Belo,M..
Recent studies have employed tympanic thermometry to assess lateralization of cognitive and emotional functions in primates. However, no studies using this technique have investigated the possibility of hemispheric specialization in New World monkeys. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate tympanic membrane (TM) temperature asymmetries and their possible correlation with stress responses in marmosets (Callithrix penicillata). Infrared TM thermometry was completed bilaterally in 24 animals (14 males and 10 females) during a stressful situation of capture and restraint. There were no significant differences between gender. A significant negative correlation was observed between TM temperature of the right ear and the number of captures (r...

Cochard, Jean-claude; Goarant, Cyrille; Boglio, Eric; Lemonnier, Hugues.
The influence of the soil quality of culture pond on the physiological state of Penaeus stylirostris reared in earthen shrimp pond in New Caledonia was investigated by the measurement of the osmoregulatory capacity and magnesium hemolymph concentration of samples of 20 of these shrimp captured in the pond and maintained for 24 or 48h in cages laid on the bottom. A first experiment was affected by the occurrence of a pathology caused by Vibrio penaeicida probably due to initial handling stress. The second experiment showed that the osmoregulatory capacity is depresssed as a function of the soil quality : the more it is reduced the more the depression is important.

Fetal malformation in a marmoset (Callithrix jacchus): case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Ferraz,M.C.; Matos,A.V.R.; Prestes,N.C.; Ferreira,J.C.P.; Francelino,L.C.; Cunha,F.S.; Oba,E..
Callithrix jacchus is a neotropical primate adaptable in captivity. Colonies can be easily established in a short time and at low cost compared to other species of larger primates, which are normally used in laboratory. Because they are phylogenetically similar to humans in situations that induce anxiety, these small primates are increasingly being used in research involving the stress response. Wild animals in captivity are subjected to a series of stressful events that depending on the duration and intensity can modify the organic homeostasis. Observed in this study, serious problems occurred with the formation in fetal offspring of Callithrix jacchus kept in an environment with a high degree of stress.

Fish welfare: the state of science by scientometrical analysis Biological Sciences
Ghisi, Nédia de Castilhos; Oliveira, Elton Celton de.
In 2014, Brazil produced 474.33 thousand tons of captive-bred fish. In addition, regulatory agencies of animal ethics and welfare have recently encouraged experiments to be done using simpler vertebrates, such as fish. The aim of this article was to perform a scientometric analysis of scientific production that deals with fish welfare, in an attempt to find trends and gaps in this line of research. Our analyses showed a growing concern about fish welfare, although several questions remained inadequately covered. The most studied species was the Atlantic salmon, with Norway having the most publications on this theme. There are controversies among scientists about fish capacity for suffering and enjoyment (sentience). As regards slaughter or euthanasia,...

Genetic changes in grapevine genomes after stress induced by in vitro cultivation, thermotherapy and virus infection, as revealed by AFLP Genet. Mol. Biol.
Baránek,Miroslav; Raddová,Jana; Krizan,Bretislav; Pidra,Miroslav.
The Amplification Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) technique was employed to study genetic variations which can be induced in vines by the stress occurring during different aspects of viticulture (in vitro cultivation, in vitro thermotherapy and virus infection). Analysis of AFLP banding patterns, generated by using 15 primer combinations, pointed to negligible genetic variation among plants exposed to individual stress. The average of similarity coefficients between differently stressed plants of the cultivars Müller Thurgau and Riesling were 0.984 and 0.991, respectively, as revealed by AFLP analysis. The low incidence of observed polymorphism demonstrates the high level of genome uniformity in plants reproduced by in vitro micropropagation via nodes,...

Summer mortality of Pacific oysters is known in several countries. However no specific pathogen has been systematically associated with this phenomenon. A complex combination of environmental and biological parameters has been suggested as the cause and is now starting to be identified. A high genetic basis was found for survival in oysters when a first generation (G1) was tested in three sites during summer. This paper presents a synthesis on physiological characteristics of two selected groups ('R' and 'S', from families selected for resistance and susceptibility to summer mortality respectively), of the second and third generations. R and S showed improvement or reduction of survival compared with the control in both field and laboratory trials...
